This policy lists the cookies and similar browser storage this website uses: what each one is for, who sets it, and how long it lasts. It also explains what Google receives before you make a choice. Our Privacy Statement covers how we handle personal data more generally.
What this covers
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. Your browser’s local storage and session storage do a similar job, except that what they hold is not sent to the website with every request. The law treats all of them the same way, and so does this policy.
This policy covers this website. Other Splento websites and services may use cookies of their own, and are not covered here.
Your choices
The first time you visit, a banner asks whether we may set optional cookies. Reject all and Accept all are equally easy, and Settings lets you choose by category. No optional cookie is set until you accept. Carrying on browsing without choosing is not agreement.
You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings button at the bottom of every page, which opens the same choices. Your choice is saved in this browser only, so another browser or device will ask again. We also ask again after 12 months, or sooner if we add a new kind of optional cookie.
When you reject analytics cookies, or withdraw consent you gave before, we delete the Google Analytics cookies stored for splento.com in your browser straight away. That includes any that another Splento website has set on the shared splento.com domain.
Strictly necessary storage
These items keep the site working the way you left it, so they do not need your consent and cannot be switched off. None of them is a cookie. We set all three ourselves.
- splento:cookie-consent:
- Local storage. Remembers whether you accepted analytics cookies, when you chose, and which version of these choices you were shown, so the banner does not ask on every page. It also holds a random ID, which is sent to us with each choice you make and links your choices in our consent records, described below. The choice lasts 12 months. The ID stays until you clear your browser’s storage, and a new choice keeps it.
- splento:events-banner-dismissed:
- Local storage. Set when you close the notice about event photography at the top of the page, or follow its link, so the notice stays closed. Lasts until you clear your browser’s storage.
- splento:stale-build-reload-at:
- Session storage. Set only if part of a page fails to load, usually because we released a new version of the site while you had it open. The page then reloads itself to fetch it. It holds the time of that reload, so the page cannot reload over and over. Deleted when you close the tab.
Analytics cookies, only with your consent
If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics sets the two cookies below. They let us count visits and returning visitors, and see which pages people use and how they move around the site, so we can improve it. Google provides Google Analytics and receives what it collects. Google Analytics keeps the data linked to these cookies for 14 months.
- _ga:
- Set by Google on splento.com. Holds a random ID that tells one browser from another, so repeat visits can be counted. Lasts 2 years from your latest visit.
- _ga_LTTT0LEJZC:
- Set by Google on splento.com. Keeps track of your current visit for our Google Analytics property. Lasts 2 years from your latest visit.
Whatever you choose, we tell Google that advertising cookies, the use of your data for advertising, and personalised ads are all refused. Nothing on this site changes that.
What Google receives before you choose
Google Analytics loads on every visit, but sets no cookies until you accept. Before you choose, it still sends Google a message when a page loads, and when you do some of the things on a page that Google Analytics measures, such as scrolling to near the bottom.
Each message contains the address and title of the page, the page you came from, the time, your browser and operating system and their versions, your screen size and language, and whether you have accepted analytics cookies. Like any request your browser makes, it also reveals your IP address to Google, which Google Analytics uses to work out your approximate location.
Each message also carries a random ID, made when the page loads. It links the pages you view in one tab until you reload or close it. Unless you accept, the ID is never saved in your browser, so it does not link one visit to the next. If you accept, Google Analytics saves that same ID in the _ga cookie, so the messages sent earlier in that tab are linked to your later visits. Google uses these messages to estimate, in aggregate, the visits it cannot measure with cookies.
If you reject, Google Analytics stops measuring from that moment, and sends nothing on later visits while your choice lasts. Something it measured just before you chose can still reach Google a few seconds afterwards. Your browser still downloads the Google Analytics code from Google on each visit, which reveals your IP address to Google, as loading our typefaces does.
Consent records
When you make a choice, in the banner or in Cookie settings, your browser sends it to our server. The server keeps a record, so we can show whether and when consent was given. Each record holds only these six things:
- ID:
- The random ID from splento:cookie-consent.
- Version:
- Which version of these choices you were shown.
- Choice:
- Whether you accepted analytics cookies.
- Where:
- The banner or Cookie settings.
- Page:
- The address of the page you were on, without any query string.
- Time:
- When our server received the choice.
The record does not include your IP address, details of your browser or device, your cookies, or the page you came from. As with any request to this website, Cloudflare, which delivers it, and our web server see your IP address when the choice is sent. The record does not keep it.
Because the ID stays in your browser, a record can be matched to the browser that made the choice. We therefore treat the records as personal data, and our Privacy Statement sets out our lawful basis for keeping them. They are deleted after 24 months.
Google Fonts
Our typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. Your browser requests them from Google when a page loads, so Google receives your IP address. Google Fonts sets no cookies. This happens on every visit, whatever you choose, because the fonts are part of the page.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Your browser’s settings let you block or delete cookies and other site data, and its help pages explain how. Blocking cookies stops the Google Analytics cookies being set, whatever you choose here.
Clearing site data for splento.com removes every cookie and storage item listed on this page, your cookie choice included, so the banner will ask again. If your browser blocks site storage altogether, the site still works, but it cannot remember your choice and will ask on every visit.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the cookies or storage this website uses change. The version published here always shows its effective date. If we add a new kind of optional cookie, we will ask for your choice again before setting it.
