4 ways you can change the world

Scroll

It’s fair to say that 2020 has been a tough year for the world so far. Lockdown has provided millions with the opportunity to reflect and think about what positive impact they can have to make this world a better place. If you are one of these heroes then this is the place for you. Here are 4 small but impactful ways anyone can implement, to change the world.

Get informed, get political

Do not underestimate your influence. You’d be surprised at what impact you can have from just having conversations with people about the pressing issues the world faces. If you stay informed and share your interesting insights with others it acts as a domino effect, they become informed, they pass it on, and the cycle continues.

If you want to inflict change on a large scale, politics could be the way to go. Unfortunately, though, too many people think they need a politics degree from Oxbridge to do so. You can create political change by visiting local constituency meetings, contacting your MP, and speaking out on social media. Start the conversation.

The best recent example of this is a 16-year-old refusing to go to school to raise awareness of the lack of progress in the world climate change issue. When she started she was alone, but a few months later the first global school strike was called, 1.6 million took part in 128 countries. Her name was Greta Thunberg.

Swap the four wheels for two

Cycling

30% of the EU’s carbon emissions come from the transport sector. The carbon dioxide emissions and associated air pollution mean it has never been a more vital time to change the way we travel and get the rusty old bike out of the shed. Apart from helping the planet, using a bike as your mode of transport has a whole range of physical health benefits such as reducing the risk of heart disease as well as being known to improve mental health. Take a look at how Copenhagen has changed its transportation culture and are leading the way for a future on two wheels.

Maybe you have your reasons for not making the switch to two wheels but other alternatives do exist. Listed below are some alternatives to the traditional use of the fossil fuel propelled car:

  • Walk
  • Public Transport
  • Carshare
  • Scooter (Look at Oslo for inspiration)

A minute on the lips

Food consumption now accounts for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 60% of all biodiversity loss

The farming of animals and agriculture for food consumption requires huge amounts of land space which in turn causes deforestation. This problem is only getting worse with an increasing population. Furthermore, mass water shortages, intensive farming, and primary greenhouse gas emissions are all issues with our current method of feeding the planet.

By switching to locally sourced food you can massively reduce your carbon footprint as well as helping out local farmers. In addition, veganism is taking the world by storm due to its supposed health benefits, reduction in animal intensive farming, and also its reduced carbon-intensity.

So on your next trip to Tesco (other supermarkets are available), think about what is in your shopping trolley and what you could potentially change to help the planet as well as local farmers.

Get creative, educate and engage the world

“The first step in solving a problem is to recognise that it exists” – Zig Ziglar

Ask yourself, what you are passionate about? What small thing can you do to change just your world for the better or even your local community?

I love John Flintoff’s example of purposefully growing too many tomato plants one year so he could give them to his neighbours, who then also started growing tomatoes. This started a ‘grow your own food’ movement in his local community.

However big or small, the objective is to engage people in what you are doing, so they too may try something themselves.

You could get a professional visual content provider to take incredible photos/videos of your initiative which then could be used to inspire the next changemakers. Some visual content providers like Splento specialise in this kind of project and can deliver your content back to you within 24 hours to get your change off to a flying start!

Conclusion

We all have an opportunity to change the world. By using these principles you can not only change your world but the others around you for the better. All it takes is that first step.
