Scroll

2017 is shaping up to be a very interesting year for tech startups; with smarter CRM solutions, higher threats of cyber attacks, more capable UX design and AI, AR and IoT on the rise, the tech startup playing field is reaching a whole new level. With that being said, we’ve collated a list of the most interesting startups and small businesses that are worth paying attention to this year.

  1. EVRYTHNG

EVRYTHNG believe that every physical object in our world can be more intelligent and interactive by being connected to the web. The Internet of Things is a trend that is taking the industry by storm this year. These guys are leveraging this and making everyday products, such as your toothbrush and coffee machine into what they call Smart Products, by connecting them to a central hub on their cloud-based platform. One of the benefits of these Smart Products is that they can talk to each other in a way that will make your life easier in so many ways! Even though so far they have only worked with products under the world’s biggest brands, such as Unilever, Mars and Brompton Bikes, EVRYTHNG sees a future where everything is connected and is set to become a huge player in the IoT league.

  1. Pavegen

Pavegen harvests energy through footfall. Just let that sink in for a second. They do it by tactically placing paving tiles in places where there is a high footfall, such as St Omer Station, France, Dupont Circle, Washington and Canary, Wharf London. The tiles are wirelessly connected to an API that converts the movement into energy and transmits it to the connected device when it needs it. The concept of generating energy that is safe for our health and the environment is getting a lot of attention this year, and understandably so. Not only that, it is creating powerful brand experiences at events and in everyday life, with smart advertising and interactive billboards and signs. It’s also incredibly useful for analysing consumer behaviour through measuring footfall. Want to know more about the science behind it? We’ll leave it to the experts to explain – check out their website!

  1. OpenBack

Most app users find push notifications annoying. The only way to avoid ‘over-notification’ is by turning your notifications off, but what if you miss something important? OpenBack has the answer. The app helps companies tactically time their notifications in conjunction with other apps on their customer’s phones in order to avoid annoyance through premature notification. This mutually beneficial concept is being recognised to have a lot of potential seeing as it won the ESB Spark of Genius Award at the Web Summit in Lisbon last year.

  1. Vizlegal

Vizlegal positions itself as the ultimate tool for legal research and aims to make legal information as accessible as possible for legal professionals. They do this by analysing and collating trillions of online data entries, meaning industry professionals can undergo sophisticated research, whilst saving time and resources. Other features include API integration, judgement updates, sharing and network preferences and a clean and efficient user interface. Vizlegal has been identified as one of the rising business stars of the future by NDRC Investor Day and has been rewarded with access to €30,000 follow-on investment, so they must be doing something right!

  1. Carspring

Buying used cars has always come with a risk, but not anymore – Carspring guarantee that the second-hand car you purchase with them is meticulously inspected, checked and cleaned so that it arrives with you in the best possible condition. Carspring also takes care of everything that is involved in the often painful process of technical and legal screening before buying a second-hand car. Customers can rest assured that founders and ex-McKinsey consultants, Peter Baumgart and Maximilian Vollenbroich know what they’re talking about and have got them covered.

  1. WaveOptics

When Google first launched their Smart Glasses there was an influx of companies who tried to reproduce the technology. Not many have been able to do this successfully, but WaveOptics has not only succeeded, it has exceeded – they’ve brought Augmented Reality into the mix. They’ve also found a way to make the lenses thinner and lighter making it more appealing to a wider market. With their “waveguides” technology, founders Sumanta Talukdar and David Grey hope to bring Augmented Reality to the mass market, not only for fun but as a solution to many company logistical problems. The thing that puts this startup in a brilliant position in this competitive market is that their technology is scalable and can be manufactured using well-known and readily available tools, materials and processes.

  1. SpatialOS

Every indie game developer’s dream is becoming a reality, as SpatialOS has created a platform that allows users to build their own virtual world bigger and with more players than ever before. Not only that but they also handle all infrastructure management and data synchronisation so that the speed at which users can build and grow their online world is greatly increased compared to other game development software. There is also plenty of learning resources and training content available on their platform to aid you in creating your online world. What’s more, SpatialOS can also be integrated with multiple servers and game engines, such as Unreal or Unity engine. The software has just entered beta launch and is available for free trial now on their website. Anyone else feeling like they’ve stepped into an episode of Star Trek?

  1. Sunrise Health

This is an important healthcare startup to watch in 2017. Its aim is to improve mental health care and their approach is to combine the support of group chat, the safety of anonymity, the guidance of on-demand professional therapy sessions and the protection of AI technology, which has the ability to detect life-threatening emergencies, into an all-in-one, holistic care service. This concept makes mental health care more accessible and is believed to help eradicate the stigma attached to seeking help in the future. The beta version has already launched and patients are being invited to test it out for free. Sunrise Health is licensed as software-as-a-service to healthcare providers and is built to integrate with existing mental providers, which, in our opinion makes it a serious contender in the best startups battle.

  1. Zipline

Being the world’s first commercial drone delivery service, this amazing startup builds drones that are able to transport life-saving medical supplies like vaccines, medicines, or blood, which can be ordered by text message! It’s distribution centre stores and packs the supplies within minutes of receiving the request and the drone itself travels at 100 km/h, making delivery faster than any other mode of transport. This innovative concept will help save lives by bringing essential supplies to those who lack adequate access to them due to challenging terrain and gaps in infrastructure.
